Price: $17.00 CAD

Support healthy tropical roots with Maya Growing Mediums Aroid Soil. Made in North Vancouver, this chunky, peat-moss-free potting mix is designed for Monstera, Philodendron, Anthurium, Pothos and other aroids that prefer generous airflow around their roots.

The blend combines coco coir, coco chips, multiple grades of perlite, bark, sphagnum moss, charcoal, worm castings and biochar. Its open structure balances moisture retention with drainage and helps reduce the compaction associated with finer indoor potting soils.

Best for: Aroids, tropical climbers and semi-epiphytic plants with thicker roots or aerial roots that benefit from a chunky, well-aerated growing medium.

Chunky Aroid Soil for Tropical Houseplants

Many aroids naturally grow by climbing trees, spreading across forest floors or establishing roots in loose organic material. Their thicker roots often benefit from a growing medium with larger air spaces than conventional all-purpose potting soil provides.

Maya Aroid Soil combines moisture-retaining ingredients with coarse structural components. Coco coir and sphagnum moss help hold moisture, while bark, coco chips, perlite and charcoal create drainage channels and airflow throughout the root zone.

Chunky Structure

Bark and coco chips create larger spaces that allow air to circulate around substantial aroid roots.

Balanced Moisture

Coco coir and sphagnum moss help maintain moisture without creating an excessively dense mix.

Root Aeration

Fine and coarse perlite support drainage and help maintain oxygen around the root system.

How to Use

  1. Select a clean container with adequate drainage holes.
  2. Remove the plant from its existing pot and gently loosen tightly circling roots.
  3. Remove loose, compacted or deteriorated old soil without unnecessarily damaging healthy roots.
  4. Add Maya Aroid Soil and position the plant at approximately its previous growing depth.
  5. Fill around the roots while allowing the chunky mix to retain its naturally open structure.
  6. Water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain.
  7. Place the plant in suitable light and monitor moisture before watering again.

Do not compress the blend excessively when repotting. Its open spaces are an important part of the drainage and aeration it provides.

Aroid Soil FAQ

What is aroid soil?

Aroid soil is a chunky growing medium designed to provide drainage and airflow around the thicker roots of plants such as Monstera, Philodendron and Anthurium.

Can I use this soil for Monstera?

Yes. Maya identifies Monstera as one of the primary plant groups suited to its Aroid Blend.

Is this suitable for Philodendron and Pothos?

Yes. The blend is designed for Philodendron, Epipremnum or Pothos, Scindapsus and other tropical climbing plants that appreciate an airy root environment.

Is Maya Aroid Soil peat-free?

Maya describes the blend as peat-moss-free. It does contain sustainably harvested sphagnum moss, which is botanically and commercially distinct from conventional sphagnum peat moss.

Does chunky aroid soil prevent root rot?

A chunky growing medium can help reduce compaction and prolonged wet conditions, but it cannot guarantee that root rot will not occur. Watering, drainage holes, light, temperature and overall plant health also matter.
